The Best Time To Visit Seoul, South Korea’s Electric Capital

Seoul is a city that never slows down. One minute you’re wandering through the courtyards of a centuries-old palace, and the next, you’re swept into the bright chaos of a neon-lit night market buzzing with food. It’s a place where old-world charm and cutting-edge cool exist side by side — and the best part? While the summers are blistering hot and winters biting cold, there’s no really bad time to go, just different experiences to match the seasons.

Here’s a seasonal guide to help you decide when to plan that perfect Seoul vacation:

Spring (March To June)

If you want Seoul at its most romantic, spring is your season. The city wakes up from winter with bursts of cherry blossoms in every corner—especially stunning in Yeouido Park and along the Han River. If boat rides are not your jam, pick a corner for a chimaek picnic of fried chicken and beer. Seoul too has a cherry blossom viewing culture, and two favorite spots are Yeouido Park and Namsan Park where the air is cool but pleasant, and the whole city feels fresh, floral, and ready to play.

Summer (July To August)

Summer in Seoul is hot — in every sense of the word. Yes, it gets humid, and the monsoon can crash the party in July, but the city’s energy levels are off the charts. From rooftop bars to K-pop concerts, summer here is for night owls and thrill-seekers. You can explore different galleries or spend a day at Asia’s largest underground shopping mall, COEX, which also has an aquarium, library, movie theater and casino for your evening plans.

Autumn (September To November)

Ask any Seoul local their favorite season, and chances are they’ll say autumn. With crisp mornings, clear skies, and stunning foliage, it’s the kind of weather that makes you want to walk everywhere, and take a million photos along the way. September is also the time for South Korea’s fall harvest holiday, Chuseok, which sees the city get decked up for a massive procession near Gyeongbokgung station. It is also a great time for hiking trails in Bukhansan or sitting in a cosy cafe corner in Samcheong-dong.

Winter (December To February)

Arguably the best time for budget travellers, Seoul in winter has a quiet kind of magic. The city is less crowded and always has the smell of roasted chestnuts in the air, and snow sometimes dusts the tiled rooftops of old palaces. It’s chilly, yes, but there’s a certain charm to warming up with a steaming bowl of kimchi stew after a day of exploring. A day trip to the nearby ski slopes such as the ones in Jisan (an hour’s drive from the city) comes highly recommended.
