Fun With Kids: S.E.A. Aquarium’s 12th anniversary celebration; new kids escape room from South Korea

SINGAPORE – Make family time all the more special with these ideas and activities.

S.E.A. Aquarium’s 12th anniversary celebration

The S.E.A. Aquarium, which launched in November 2012, will be transformed into the Singapore Oceanarium later in 2025.

Three times its current size, the upcoming attraction at Resorts World Sentosa will include a deep ocean exhibit and a research and learning centre.

Before its temporary closure, the aquarium is running a commemorative programme, 12 Years Of Creating Wonder, until April 30. It offers a final opportunity for families to experience the current exhibits and celebrate the aquarium’s legacy.

Explore curated zones, such as the Wall Of Fame, which showcases the aquarium’s milestones and achievements. These include establishing the Aquarist Lab in 2023, a nursery where sea jellies, clownfish and other marine animals are bred.

Kids In The Room, an escape room concept from South Korea with five branches there, opens in Singapore on March 10. Its outlet at Marina Square offers eight escape room games designed for families with children aged five to 15.

The games encourage families to collaborate and complete quests in under 30 minutes, all while learning about different occupations and countries.

First, your family has to put away all mobile phones and immerse yourselves in role-playing by wearing costumes related to a chosen occupation. The diverse job range includes a baker in Singapore, a K-pop star in South Korea and a sushi shop owner in Japan.

Through puzzles and challenges, you pick up relevant skills, such as basic Japanese characters in the sushi shop.

In the K-pop star game, you learn to play the keyboard for the catchy part of viral hit Apt. (2024), by K-pop star Rose from Blackpink and American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars.

Unlike typical escape rooms, Kids In The Room games are designed without horror elements to ensure a fun and safe experience. They are played in well-lit rooms which do not have locked doors, to avoid children feeling trapped and anxious.

Although originating in South Korea, the founder of Kids In The Room is Singaporean Vivienne Tan, 36, who lived in South Korea for 13 years and is married to a Korean.

Her husband, Mr Byron Kwon Choong-do, 40, is the chief executive of Unreal Company, which he established in 2016 and is behind the Sherlock Holmes escape room chain of 40 outlets in South Korea.

Ms Tan was inspired to create an escape room for kids in 2022 for her daughters, now nine and seven. She believes that solving puzzles and playing together can help families bond and the children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Every family gets its own game room, and advance booking is encouraged at www.kidsintheroom.sg. At least one child is required for the booking, and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ticket prices for a bundle of two games start at $32 a child and $11 an adult. A 10 per cent discount is available until April 18.
